Oxygen cutting

The advantages of the process are: relatively low cost of the equipment, ease of mechanization of cutting and very broad range of the thickness of cutting – usually from 1,0 to 1000mm, in special cases even above 2,5m. In order to enable the process of metal cutting, the following conditions must be fulfilled:

  • the temperature of initiation of the material ignition in the oxygen has to be lower than its melting temperature,
  • the melting temperature of the solid products of burning (oxides) should be lower than the melting temperature of the material cut, and after melting they should be thin-fluid slag, easy to blow off from the crac after cutting,
  • the amount of volatile products of the reaction, coming from burning of alloying elements and impurities of the material cut, this amount should be small enough not to cause excessive worsening the purity of the oxygen stream,
  • the amount of heat generated in the burning process and in the heating up flame should exceed the heat loses for environment to the material cut, in order to maintain the temperature in the crack higher than the temperature of the initiation of ignition,

These conditions can be applied only for pure iron and unalloyed and low-alloyed steel, while the cast iron, high-alloyed steel and non-iron metals and its alloys do not meet any of the above conditions and they cannot be cut with the oxygen.
